Preventing the Billing surprises

Nowadays wireless Operators in India are busy launching new services for their 3G and  GPRS  networks to increase the falling ARPU.

Many times, subscribers get (un)pleasant surprises when they see their monthly voice as well as data usage bills.

There are many promotional packs available for data usage as well as ISD calls.  But  in case of ISD calls, the deduced rates are available for very few countries.  Also in case of data usage, the postpaid subscribers don't get any warnings if their data usage has crossed certain limit.

There is no effort from the operators  in India to prevent the surprises which the subscribers get when they receive their bills.

There could be multi fold reasons - already the ARPU of many operators are very low. (INR 100 to 150).  The postpaid billing systems which operators are using might not been enabled with checking the data or voice usage in real time.

On the contrary, many operators in other parts of world (e.g.Europe) are taking efforts to make sure their subscribers don't get billing surprises. Based on the profile of the subscribers, the operators set some thresholds. With the help of  unified billing systems, a check is made if this threshold  has reached before the user makes the call or starts a data session.
If this limit has reached, the subscriber is notified accordingly.

Not sure, if Indian operators would like to go for such solutions in near future.
